Podcast #1

Creating a podcast was a much more tedious than I anticipated - or could have imagined for that matter. I thought that I would be able to film the three minutes video we needed in less than thirty minutes, and then be able to edit it with no difficulty at all. I was terribly wrong! Taping took three hours, and then I added another three hours worth of editing... for three minutes! After actually doing each step myself I feel more comfortable with the technology, but also have a realization of how much I really don't know. I've found that running a video camera is not difficult at all, the hard part is being in front of the camera. I needed a lot more script than I thought I would need. Also, ad libbing is not as easy in front of a camera as it looks. If I can get my footage into an editing program I feel like I can do the editting without much hardache. However, remembering all the steps involved and where to find little inserts (like adding pictures and music) will be my main challenge. This is definately a learning process and I hope that the next few posts will have better content, as well as be easier to create. You can check out this Podcast under "My Podcasts".

Brandi--
Let me start out by saying that I agreed 100% with everything you wrote in your blog entry. This stuff is way more complicated than it looks. In terms of your podcast, I thought it was well-organized and each topic you addressed was clearly discussed. I liked that you placed title slides in between each topic; they made for smooth transitions between talking points. I also liked the stills that you used when you were talking about your husband, your hobbies, and your dogs. They were very appropriate to what you were discussing and provided some context and insight into who and what you were talking about. You also seemed very comfortable in front of the camera. If you were nervous at all, it did not show. Likewise, in your blog post, you mentioned that ad libbing was difficult and you would have liked more of a script. Again, any issues you thought you had with the content of your presentation did not make it into your podcast. You appeared to be very relaxed while you were talking. I liked that you had a background track accompanying your discussion. It added a very relaxed, but upbeat feel to the podcast. There were a few places where the music was drowning out what you were saying. There were also a few places where as you faded out, some of your audio was cutoff. Overall, I think the main points you touched on were presented well, and in a manner that was professional, but also friendly and casual.

Brandi-
Good job on your first podcast. I know how hard you worked in getting the information organized and gaining your pace in front of the camera.
I like the music in the background throughout the entire show. The only thing I would work on for next time, in regards to muse, would be the volume. There is a way to slightly change the volume at any point in the song, I can try and show you. This way you could fade in and out depending on what is happening in your film. I like the way you laid the photos over while you continued with your speech, they looked good and gave us an idea of the things you were discussing. I also like the lighting, the way it turned out it almost makes your video look like a black and white, nice job. A final suggestion would be to put a slide at the end or fade to black so the end if more defined. Can’t wait to see your next podcast about CSR!

You did really good job for your first podcast. Your opening music and your bright white background match. I enjoyed your podcast with music. Excellent choice!!! Some point, the music was a little loud to hear your voice.
You mention how difficult to be infront of camera. However, you seemed calm and steady. I feel like I was having conversation with you. It was comfortable and easy to follow what you’re saying. You speak clear and fluent without any pause. It is a well-organized podcast. I think your final paper topic of how CSR use new technology seems a cool topic. I really want to look further how your final paper goes.

Brandi,
Overall your podcast was well shot, produced, and edited. The only real complaint I have is the volume of your bed music when you are talking about your husband. There might be a feature in iMovie called "ducking" which could help you alleviate the problem in future podcasts. Ducking basically senses when you are speaking and turns down the bed music at the right times.

Your framing was good! The opening shot had a little too much headroom, but that was fixed after that first opening sequence. Also, you might consider trying to frame yourself on a third of the screen like we talked about in class. Also, you might try looking off camera during the interview to add some sense of pull across the shot as the viewer watches your eyes.

However, overall, you did a great job with your first podcast, I am very impressed!

Brandi,

Sounds like you learned many of the right lessons working with this. The audio sounds good underneath the video, though it gets much too loud about a minute or so into the project. The slides worked well. I was pleased to see that you kept the titles consistent through the video. The podcast topics work well. You really need to work on the audio levels. Remind me and I can show you how to fix this. the framing is okay overall, you keep about the right amount of headroom. Watch for distractions in the background such as the picture frame. Probably best to move it for the video. Probably best to fade out the video at the end.
